Surrender is a site-responsive artwork that utilises wind energy to produce acoustic sound. It is a large-scale work specifically designed for open-air environments, exploring the possibility of producing complex acoustic sound from a single material: a biodegradable plastic sheet. The material produces a range of high-fidelity sounds and rhythms as it dances in response to the wind, creating ever-changing washes of soft noise. Due to its specific material properties, the lightweight sheet reacts to subtle fluctuations in air pressure, revealing the invisible and inaudible qualities of the wind. In the first iteration of the work the material was suspended by a line spanning 250 meters across an olive grove in the valley of the Greek landscape. In this version the material will be attached to a large helium balloon that allows the material to be positioned up to a hundred meters from the ground, exploring the possibilities of the vertical sound axis. Surrender is from the artist’s on-going Action Without Action series (2012–present) – a collection of works that explore the sonic qualities of everyday materials, creating high-fidelity sound with low-tech means.

The work will be presented in one of Brighton’s natural environments for a limited time on March 12th. See location info below!

Joshua Le Gallienne (b. 1985 UK)

Joshua Le Gallienne is a non-binary British artist exploring sustainable and unconventional approaches to the production and perception of acoustic sound within an artistic context. Through sculpture, installation, and performance, the artist stages intimate experiences that explore the relationships between sound, physical materials and environmental phenomena.

Unusually, for an artist working predominantly with sound, Joshua does not use digital technologies, loudspeakers, or conventional sources of energy in their practice and operates primarily outside of a traditional gallery context. With each new piece, new materials and configurations are introduced. Previous works have employed pyrotechnics, blocks of ice, compressed air, carbonated liquids, and biodegradable plastic sheeting for their sonic qualities.

Since 2012 Joshua’s work has been regularly presented in the UK and internationally, receiving numerous awards including The Auxiliary’s Sonic Arts Emerging Artist Exhibition Award (2019) and Sound and Music’s Francis Chagrin Award (2020). Their work is unmediated and mostly undocumented, in line with this the artist has no website or online presence.

Sound Art Brighton Festival is a city-wide programme of events presenting sound installations, sound sculptures, interactive sound events, performances, sound walks, audio and audiovisual works, both in galleries and outdoors, throughout the city of Brighton and Hove (UK).

Combining local sound art talents with international guests, the festival celebrates the diversity and range of this broad and hybrid art practice and pays homage to the multitude of sounds to be found in our city – with the Downs on one side and the sea on the other, as part of a UNESCO biosphere.
