Heritage

Brighton has a rich history of sound art and technological innovation dating back centuries. Part of our core mission is to identify and preserve this cultural heritage, reaching a broader audience. Artist and researcher Joshua Le Gallienne is leading our heritage projects. A labour of love, Joshua has spent thousands of hours over the last three years, compiling an archive of research that dates back to the 19th century. Their findings outline over 1500 artworks, exhibitions, technological innovations, and cultural events related to sound in Brighton. The research will pay particular attention to underrepresented practitioners to highlight the diverse sonic cultural heritage that the city has cultivated.

We are in the process of seeking external funding to transform the findings into an interactive archive, a chronological timeline and a multimedia archive. We can’t wait to share the results with you soon!
