Listening to Brighton
World Listening Day 2021
17 July 2021 • Online
A remote listening event held to celebrate World Listening Day, July 18th 2021. We encouraged interested parties to spend half an hour of their time listening to their surroundings in a location of their choosing across the city of Brighton & Hove, any time between midday and midnight (GMT) on Sunday July 18th.
To celebrate World Listening Day 2021, Sound Art Brighton hosted an event for local listening in Brighton, UK. We encouraged any interested parties to dedicate up to half an hour of their time to listen to their surroundings in a location of their choosing across the city of Brighton & Hove, any time between midday and midnight (GMT) on July 18th. Any and all locations were considered valid; urban, suburban and rural and no technology is necessary to participate.
We encouraged listeners to pay attention to the types of sounds that can be perceived; considering the relationships between the different categories of soundscape outlined by pioneering bio-acoustician and soundscape ecologist Bernie Krause: anthropophony (human generated sound from either humans or man-made technologies); biophony (the collective sound of vocalising animals in a given environment); geophony (naturally occurring non-biological sounds and natural forces, such as water, wind, and thunder).

About World Listening Day:
World Listening Day takes place every July 18 to honour the birthday of Canadian composer and environmentalist R. Murray Schafer, often credited as the founder of acoustic ecology. Born on July 18, 1933, he developed his World Soundscape Project, which laid the fundamental ideas and practices of acoustic ecology in the 1970s. The theme for World Listening Day 2021 is ‘The Unquiet Earth,’ created by Lisbon-based filmmaker, curator, and organiser Raquel Castro.
