Sonic Vantage Points soundwalk

Sonic Vantage Points was a meditational soundwalk that explored the urban architecture and natural terrain of Brighton, beginning at St. George’s Church and ending in Queen’s Park led by American sound artist Chris Sciacca.

Often, as we navigate safely through the urban environment, by necessity we must pay attention to what we are hearing. If our paths are routine or highly familiar, we may deem the everyday sounds as commonplace and thus uninteresting. At this stage of listening, our perception or experience is always of or about something else and our attention is directed at or in relation to the sound as an object. Yet, if we begin to actively and intentionally listen to sound in space, we may soon become aware that what we hear is not solely the totality of the “things” we hear in space, but the character of the space itself. The properties of sound – its proximity or distance, direction, reverberation, frequency and duration, are all determined by where we have positioned ourselves within an environment: our sonic vantage point. This walk will invite all to be mindful of how we perceive sound through different filters of space: the urban, the natural, and the landscaped natural spaces within our cities.

World Listening Day takes place every July 18 to honour the birthday of Canadian composer and environmentalist R. Murray Schafer, often credited as the founder of acoustic ecology. Born on July 18, 1933, he developed his World Soundscape Project, which laid the fundamental ideas and practices of acoustic ecology in the 1970s. The theme for World Listening Day 2021 is ‘The Unquiet Earth,’ created by Lisbon-based filmmaker, curator, and organiser Raquel Castro.
