Location

Middlesbrough Art Weekender
Middlesbrough

Date & time

22-25 September 2022

Sound Art Brighton took part in this year’s Middlesbrough Art Weekender with two works: LOL by Olivia Louvel, a sound collage commenting on the political situation projected through the city’s CCTV and ICU a counter-surveillance work by A/B Smith.

ICU was installed in the Hill Street shopping center, occupying an empty shop on the ground floor whilst LOL was performed through the CCTV speakers.

The SAB activities in Middlesbrough made it to Yahoo news  and NARC magazine.

ICU (2021) by A/B Smith

Visitors to the installation discovered what ICU was reading into their faces and what it assumes it can reveal about emotions.  The piece examines the use of surveillance technologies through an intense audiovisual installation.

LOL (2022) by Olivia Louvel

A site-specific sonic intervention delivered through the public address system of Middlesbrough’s CCTV surveillance network. On dedicated sites in the centre of town passers-by heard political slogans, news headlines – read by the AI voice ‘Kate’ – and the sounds of protest, reflecting the current state of political affairs in Britain.

The three-part collage was created by Sound Art Brighton artist Olivia Louvel, with field-recordings by Swiss artist Stefano Christen and was produced in collaboration with Kersten Glandien.
