SUMMARY:Joshua Le Gallienne – Action Without Action
DESCRIPTION:Joshua Le Gallienne – Action Without Action\n11 Feb — 26 Feb 2022 \nIn 2022\, artist Joshua Le Gallienne will present a new work for Brighton CCA: Dorset Place\, an interactive installation utilising glass\, latex and helium to explore the relationships between sound\, space and invisible natural forces. Unusually\, for an artist working predominantly with sound\, Le Gallienne does not use digital technologies\, loudspeakers\, or conventional sources of energy in their practice. With each new piece\, new materials and configurations are introduced. Previous works have employed pyrotechnics\, blocks of ice\, compressed air\, carbonated liquids\, and biodegradable plastic sheeting for their sonic qualities. \nIn this exhibition\, the space will be filled with a number of bespoke glass bells\, each suspended in mid-air by a helium-filled balloon. The work relies on the principle of neutral buoyancy; a state of equilibrium that exists when the force of gravity is in perfect opposition to the force of lift. The helium affords the bells autonomy of movement but also makes them susceptible to a number of factors. In addition to the effect of gravity\, the balloons respond to variations in air pressure\, air currents\, temperature\, humidity\, vibration\, and electromagnetic radiation. The complex combination of these influences determine the behaviour and configuration of the artwork. Over time\, it will offer subtle perceptive differences as the bells occupy new spatial positions. Visitors will be able to contribute to the ongoing reconfiguration of the work simply by being present in the space. \nJoshua Le Gallienne (b. 1985) is a British artist exploring sustainable and unconventional approaches to the production and perception of acoustic sound within an artistic context. Through sculpture\, installation\, and performance\, the artist stages intimate experiences that explore the relationships between sound\, physical materials and environmental phenomena. Joshua’s work is regularly exhibited and performed in the UK and internationally; operating primarily outside of a traditional gallery context. Their work is unmediated and mostly undocumented\, in line with this the artist has no website or online presence. \nhttps://brightoncca.art/event/joshua-le-gallienne/

SUMMARY:Shared Space & Light – Murmurations
DESCRIPTION:Audio-visual installation by Shared Space & Light exploring Brighton’s starling murmurations. The projection will be visible from the outside of the building on Ship Street\, from 21 December to 16 January between 5pm and dawn. The soundtrack will be broadcast between 5pm and 8pm each day. \n… \nFabrica: This winter\, the huge glass windows of Fabrica’s East facade are transformed into a canvas for a projected artwork. Exploring Brighton’s starling murmurations\, the artwork is a newly configured version of the extremely popular exhibition Fabrica presented in winter 2020-21. This year the work is accompanied by a newly composed soundtrack by Owen Crouch. Created by Brighton-based collective Shared Space and Light (Giles Thacker\, Kate Laird and Chris Grottick)\, Murmurations reminds us of the wonder and beauty in our immediate environment. \nGiles Thacker has been filming starling murmurations for over 10 years. “Like many others\, I’ve been mesmerised by the flocking patterns of the starlings. And I love the fact that we have these awe-inspiring displays right in the heart of our urban environments – the murmurations briefly reconnect us to the natural world and are a powerful reminder of the sheer beauty and wonder of our natural heritage.” \n“The hundreds of gridded panes in these windows look like giant pixels\, suggesting a digital approach\, so for this installation I’ve taken the organic forms and fluid motion of the murmurations and combined them with their digital equivalents. Sound artist Owen Crouch has taken a similar approach to creating the soundtrack\, fusing acoustic instruments with digital effects\, building a layered soundscape that alternately swells and condenses\, capturing the pulsing flowing energy of the murmurations.”

SUMMARY:Tilly Shiner Listening Walk
DESCRIPTION:We invite you to join us on a 1-hour walk starting at Dorset Place\, Kemp Town\, heading along the coastline before looping back\, listening to The Last Freedom (2021) conceived by Tilly Shiner. Tilly will lead the walk and there will be refreshments and chat along the way. \nThe walk will take place twice\, once in the morning starting at 10.30am and once in the afternoon starting at 3.30pm. Walkers will be sent a full route in advance and headphone can be provided as necessary. \nIn The Last Freedom (2021)\, ‘Marshman’ Flavian Capes meets musician Frank Turner on a guided walk around the salt marshes in Tollesbury\, Essex. \nFlavian is a self confessed ‘archeology nerd’\, local historian\, boat builder and wild living enthusiast and has lived on boats for 30 years. His vast knowledge encompasses his personal experiences of foraging local flora and fauna\, the extraordinary tidal landscape and landmarks to the local myths\, pre-history and traditions of the marshes. \nFrank is a punk-folk singer songwriter who has released eight albums and toured worldwide. He is a self confessed ‘history nerd’ and has recently moved to the Essex coast. \nAs a person with high functioning autism\, Flavian uses walking and journeying to map his vast knowledge and relationship to the unique landscape around him. He leads Frank on an idiosyncratic walking guide\, covering everything from hunter-gathering\, Isambard Kingdom Brunel\, Kylie Minogue\, boat building\, birdsong\, Popeye\, Co-operatives\, absinthe\, jam\, Red Hills\, Romans\, Samphire\, mud walking\, deer tracking\, hawks\, Polynesians\, Bonsai\, tides\, pottery\, salt and more. \nMore info: https://brightoncca.art/event/listening-walk-with-tilly-shiner/

SUMMARY:Amy Cunningham talk
DESCRIPTION:Amy Cunningham is an artist who uses the singing voice\, sound\, video\, materials and drawing to explore patterns and glitches in technologies and environments. She has exhibited her music compositions\, performances\, video installations\, and drawings in various galleries and spaces including\, Stevens Institute of Technology\, IKON Gallery\, Cafe OTO\, Towner Gallery\, Portland Sculpture Quarry Trust\, and Serpentine Gallery London. \nIn this online performance lecture Amy will be linking material from a series of her site-based art works. These are works that respond to the visual and sonic textures found within the edgelands of industrial and coastal environments; where lichen is a pioneer\, where birds and insects go about their activities amongst aggregate\, artificial lighting\, metal structures\, and electric cabling\, where we might sense the vibrancy of non-human materials. \nPlease book to receive a link to attend this online talk hosted on zoom. Live captioning will be available for the event.

SUMMARY:Maf’j Alvarez – Eva Quantica VR
DESCRIPTION:Maf’j Alvarez imagines entering a surrealist painting in her virtual reality experience Eva Quantica\, a dreamlike bubble of lockdown Brighton as an open world to explore the various simultaneous dancing versions of Eve. Hands for hills\, a cupcake pavilion\, platforms\, statues\, depictions of people and the glowing lifeforce surging through everything. Come along and experience the virtual reality experience in the location which inspired the work – St Ann’s Well Gardens. \nCommissioned by the National Gallery\, London\, as part of National Gallery X and Audience Labs at the Royal Opera House in March 2021 Supported by King’s College London Inspiration from Crivelli’s Gardens\, by Paula Rego and using the motion capture data of Eve\, choreographed by Kristen McNally. The piece is about female power\, patriarchy\, immigration\, tradition and obligation. Maf’j explores technology as an agent of power for women and its consequences and wants to challenge the rules that always apply. The commission is experimental and explores embodiment with motion capture\, she says \n“As a recently divorced mother of two teenage sons I am also transitioning with a new set of perspectives and tools as I question my own gender and sexuality. My ability to be creatively\, financially and technologically independent is both liberating and frightening due to the obligation like Eve\, to do something with it that is meaningful and impactful whilst nourishing and protecting myself and my family.” \nThis event is suitable for ages 13 and over. The experience lasts 20 minutes with a choice of comfort settings for those who may suffer from motion sickness \nmore info: http://www.limbicfish.net/eva-quantica/

SUMMARY:People Like Us: Gone\, Gone Beyond
DESCRIPTION:Unexpected narratives expand and unravel around you\, in this immersive\, 360-degree cinematic installation. Fragments of familiar and experimental films interact with song and audio clips in ever-changing\, kaleidoscopic and kinetic collages. This work is presented by Attenborough Centre for the Creative Arts in association with CINECITY and Brighton Digital Festival. Gone\, Gone Beyond is an immersive\, audiovisual\, spatial cinema work that breaks the rectangle\, smashing the thin screen into tiny fragments\, looking beyond the frame\, climbing through to see what’s behind. It comprises movie and musical compositions: animated and sample-based music concrète collage\, juxtaposed with content filmed and recorded by the artist\, sewn together in a giant patchwork. Pull on a thread and watch whole new narratives expand and unravel all at once on a 360º palette. \nCommissioned by Naut Humon\, the founder of immersive theatre project RML CineChamber\, Gone\, Gone Beyond is a piece with seamless wraparound projection and surround-sound enveloping the audience. The project has been a work in progress since 2017\, and is showing for the first time in 2021 in feature-length format. In this 360º format\, time and space becomes elasticated\, with the use of collaged video furthering the reflection on how information comes to us as fragments and that nothing is fixed. \nmore info: https://brightondigitalfestival.org.uk/events/people-like-us-gone-gone-beyond-presented-by-attenborough-centre-for-the-creative-arts-in-association-with-cinecity-and-brighton-digital-festival \nhttps://www.attenboroughcentre.com/events/4028/gone-gone-beyond/

SUMMARY:Amaal Said – If I Could Get To You
DESCRIPTION:Amaal Said’s ‘If I Could Get to You’ is an audio-visual work that uses interviews\, film and photography to explore the process of knowing our personal histories and documenting our experience of them. \nAudiences are invited to peer through the windows at Enter Gallery by night\, to experience projected visual collages\, and a series of soundscapes accessible via QR code. \nThe work seeks to address the distances between people and places and speaks to the idea of not being close enough to the histories we’re told. Centring on memory\, what kinds of stories are told\, and how those stories are passed down\, it’s about what keeps us connected to family with entire lives abroad\, and knowing them only through fragments. \nThrough projection\, the ghost-like figures in the family archive gain a physical presence\, and the sounds of notes\, diaries\, recipes\, and voice memos collide to turn fragments into something whole again. \nIf I Could Get To You has been produced by Lighthouse and commissioned through Digital Democracies\, a two-year programme led by Threshold Studios and supported by Arts Council England. \nmore info: https://brightondigitalfestival.org.uk/events/if-i-could-get-to-you

SUMMARY:Ready to Drop
DESCRIPTION:20th – 26th August 2021 • Brighton Basketball Court (Seafront) \nReady to Drop is a site-specific sound installation created for the basketball court on Brighton’s seafront. The installation is provides a sonic response to court\, embracing the energy of the court through field recordings captured on site alongside composition elements. The work can be experienced every night from 10PM until 10AM between 20th and 26th August 2021. Free entry. \n“After dark\, when the court is empty\, the basketball sounds will be played back\, filling the air as if the ghosts of that day were still playing. Sounds of the halyards and rigging will be added. The range of sounds will be extended: on the one hand human sounds – conversations\, arguments\, announcements\, on the other hand natural sounds – sounds of the sea that range from the gentle to the apocalyptic. We looked for relationships between these two sets of sounds and made them into music that envelopes the listeners\, disorientates them\, and makes them look at the landscape again.” – John Del’ Nero \nhttps://www.artichoke.uk.com/project/ready-to-drop/

Any and all locations are valid; urban\, suburban and rural and no technology is necessary to participate\, just find a location and listen to the soundscape around you. We encourage you to pay attention to the types of sounds that are perceived. Perhaps consider the relationships between the different categories of soundscape outlined by pioneering bio-acoustician and soundscape ecologist Bernie Krause: anthropophony (human generated sound from either humans or man-made technologies); biophony (the collective sound of vocalising animals in a given environment); geophony (naturally occurring non-biological sounds and natural forces\, such as water\, wind\, and thunder). \nWorld Listening Day takes place every July 18 to honour the birthday of Canadian composer and environmentalist R. Murray Schafer\, often credited as the founder of acoustic ecology. Born on July 18 1933\, he developed his World Soundscape Project\, which laid the fundamental ideas and practices of acoustic ecology in the 1970s. The theme for World Listening Day 2021 is The Unquiet Earth\, created by Lisbon-based filmmaker\, curator\, and organiser Raquel Castro. \nEvent information: https://www.facebook.com/events/4146725282076147
